Information under the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act

As a distributor of electrical and electronic equipment, we are required to provide you with the following information:

The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol

All electrical and electronic equipment that can be used in private households bears the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol.

This symbol means that electrical and electronic equipment must not be disposed of with household waste. Waste electrical equipment must instead be collected separately from unsorted municipal waste.

Requirement to remove used batteries, rechargeable batteries and lamps

Before handing equipment over at a collection point, you must remove any used batteries and rechargeable batteries that are not enclosed within it, as well as lamps that can be removed without damage. Removal must not damage the equipment or components.

Take-back obligation

Under the applicable statutory provisions, including section 17(1) and (2) of the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG), we are required to take back waste electrical and electronic equipment subject to the following conditions:

  1. When supplying new electrical or electronic equipment to an end user, we take back, free of charge at the place of delivery or in its immediate vicinity, an old appliance of the same type that performs essentially the same functions (one-for-one return).
    • We are required to provide free collection for category 1 equipment (temperature exchange equipment), category 2 equipment (screens and monitors) and category 4 equipment (large equipment).
    • For category 3 equipment (lamps), category 5 equipment (small equipment) and category 6 equipment (small IT and telecommunications equipment), we provide suitable one-for-one return options within a reasonable distance.
  2. At your request, we take back free of charge old equipment measuring no more than 25 centimetres in any external dimension. This is not conditional on purchasing electrical or electronic equipment and is limited to three old appliances per equipment type (return without purchase).

Return options

You can send waste electrical equipment back to us. We provide a free return label for this purpose. Please ensure that the old equipment is properly packaged for shipping. We may refuse to accept equipment if contamination poses a risk to human health and safety.

Private households in Germany can also hand in waste electrical equipment free of charge at municipal collection points. An online directory is available at: ear-system.de

Batteries and rechargeable batteries

Every consumer is legally required to return used batteries and rechargeable batteries.

The crossed-out bin means that batteries and rechargeable batteries must not be disposed of with household waste. Batteries containing harmful substances also display the following markings below the crossed-out bin:

  • Pb = battery contains more than 0.004 percent lead
  • Cd = battery contains more than 0.002 percent cadmium
  • Hg = battery contains more than 0.0005 percent mercury

Used batteries and rechargeable batteries that are not enclosed within the old equipment must be removed before it is handed in. After use, they can be returned free of charge to a public collection point or to a place that sells batteries and rechargeable batteries.
